Description
Shape-Me Bike is an innovative training bicycle featuring a mechanical oscillating drive system, designed to activate the muscles of the upper body – in particular the arms, chest, abdominal muscles, back, and gluteal muscles.
The user primarily stands on the pedals, holds the handlebars, and moves the hips forward and backward. This motion generates an oscillating movement of a central bar, which, through an innovative mechanical transmission system, drives the bicycle forward.
The device can be used both outdoors on hard surfaces (asphalt, concrete, park paths) and indoors using a trainer, in home environments, fitness clubs, or training facilities.
Design and Operation
The Shape-Me Bike structure is based on a frame with a front wheel steered by a conventional handlebar and a rear drive wheel connected to the drivetrain assembly.
The central component is the oscillating bar, pivot-mounted between the user’s ankles and extending to the thighs. The user moves it forward and backward by pressing their thighs against soft rollers attached to the bar.
This motion is transmitted through a drivetrain system consisting of:
- gear wheels,
- two central chains,
- one-way clutches (freewheels),
which drive the rear wheel via a rear chain in both phases of oscillation:
- forward movement (Phase A),
- backward movement (Phase B).
The mechanism operates entirely mechanically, without any external power source, ensuring smooth, rhythmic, and quiet operation.
User Position and Movement
The user remains in an upright standing position, with feet placed on stable foot supports (pedals).
The thighs are supported by four stabilizing rollers:
- two front rollers supporting the front part of the thighs,
- two rear rollers supporting the area under the glutes.
These rollers transfer force from the hips to the oscillating bar, providing stability and a natural range of motion without the need for a saddle.
The handlebar serves both a stabilizing and dynamic function:
- in Phase A, the user pulls the handlebar to assist forward hip movement,
- in Phase B, the user pushes it to stabilize and reinforce backward motion.
This configuration enables full-body engagement, combining aerobic and strength training while developing balance, core stability, and coordination.
Main Components of Shape-Me Bike
- Main frame – hand-welded CrMo 4130 chromoly steel structure
- Front fork – steel fork with front wheel axle mount
- Front wheel (tire + rim) – responsible for steering
- Rear wheel (tire + rim) – connected to drivetrain
- Handlebar – steering and stabilization element
- Stem – connects handlebar to fork, adjustable
- Oscillating bar – primary drive element
- Stabilizing rollers – four rollers transferring force from thighs
- Roller post with adjustment system – height adjustment
- Roller supports with width adjustment – fit to body geometry
- Gear assembly – gear wheels and freewheels connected to bar
- Central chains – transfer motion from oscillating bar
- Rear chain – drives rear wheel
- Gear wheels and freewheels – enable bidirectional drive
- Foot support assembly (fixed cranks with pedals)
- Disc brake calipers – mechanical braking system
- Brake levers – mounted on handlebar
- Drivetrain guard – protects user from moving parts
- Kickstand – stabilizes bike when parked
- Rear derailleur and cassette – gear shifting system
Materials
The main structure is made of CrMo 4130 chromoly steel, hand-welded and coated with a protective paint layer against corrosion and environmental factors.
Moving components and hardware (wheels, stem, brakes, drivetrain) are made of stainless steel and aluminum, ensuring high durability.
Stabilizing rollers and body-contact elements are made of polyurethane foam and wear-resistant elastic materials, maintaining flexibility during long-term use.
Covers and auxiliary components are made of engineering plastics (ABS or glass-fiber reinforced nylon) resistant to UV radiation and moisture.
Drive Mechanism
The drive mechanism converts the oscillating motion of the bar into rotational motion of the rear wheel via a system of gears, chains, and freewheels.
The system enables propulsion during both forward and backward movement of the bar.
The entire mechanism operates:
- fully mechanically,
- without electronics,
- without external power supply.
The design is protected under ENSAVID’s patent application.
Safety
Shape-Me Bike has been designed in accordance with consumer product safety requirements (Directive 2001/95/EC).
- Edges are rounded
- Structure ensures high stability
- Moving drivetrain components (chains, gears, transmission) are partially enclosed with guards
The user manual includes detailed safety information, including a maximum user weight of 125 kg.
